Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has emerged as the winner of the Saturday election held in Delta State, located in the South-South region of Nigeria. According to the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday, Mr. Obi secured 341,866 votes to defeat other candidates in the race.
Mr. Obi’s victory in the oil-rich Delta State is seen as a setback to Ifeanyi Okowa, the governor of the state and the vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The PDP, which is the ruling party in the state, came in second with 161,600 votes, while the All Progressives Congress (APC) received 90,183 votes. The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) received 3,122 votes.
According to Channels TV, 667,149 voters were accredited for the exercise, but only 654,650 votes were recorded, out of which 615,341 were valid, and 39,309 were rejected.
Mr. Obi also won the presidential election in the neighboring states of Edo and Cross River.
He is leading so far in another South-south state, Rivers.
