In a somber ceremony, the late Senator Annie Okonkwo is currently being laid to rest in his country home, Ojolo, Idemili North Local Government Area, Anambra State. The funeral proceedings commenced this Wednesday, honoring the life and legacy of a respected figure.
Senator Okonkwo, who represented Anambra Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly from 2007 to 2011, is being bid farewell with a funeral service held at Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Ojolo. His passing on June 8, 2023, at the age of 63 in the United States, following a prolonged ailment, marked the end of an era. Tragically, his death occurred only a few weeks after his birthday anniversary.
A devout member of the Catholic Church, Senator Okonkwo was recognized with the esteemed title of Knight of Saint John for his dedicated service. His contributions to both the political and religious spheres have left a lasting impact.
Notable figures from Nigeria’s political landscape have come to pay their respects. Present at the funeral are the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio; Anambra State Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo; Abia State Governor Alex Otti; Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, accompanied by his wife; and Senator Ifeanyi Uba, among other dignitaries.
