National Disaster Commission Bill Passed by Senate

Today, the Senate successfully passed the 2024 National Disaster Commission (NCDC) bill, following its second reading earlier this year in February. The bill gained momentum after the committee on special duties presented its comprehensive report to the house.

Initially introduced in the 9th Senate by Senator Moro, the bill had previously passed both First and Second Readings but had lapsed without presidential assent before the end of that Senate’s term.

The NCDC, once established, will assume critical responsibilities including the receipt and management of funds allocated by the federal government and international donors. These funds will be directed towards the resettlement, rehabilitation, integration, and reconstruction efforts aimed at assisting victims affected by floods, as well as clashes between farmers and herders.

This legislative move marks a significant step towards enhancing the nation’s disaster response framework, ensuring better support for affected communities across Nigeria.
