The Oyo State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) has reaffirmed its commitment to working with relevant partners to expand access to potable water across the state.
Chairman of the agency, Babalola Afobaje, made this pledge in Ibadan, the state capital, during a press release marking World Water Day 2025, which focuses on the theme “Glacier Preservation.”
Afobaje emphasized the critical role water plays in public health, environmental sustainability, and economic development. He also highlighted the strides made under Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration since 2019 in improving water infrastructure and resource management.
“The Oyo State Government will continue to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to expand access to potable water, enhance climate-resilient infrastructure, and strengthen policies that ensure a water-secure future for the state,” Afobaje stated.
The Global Impact of Glacier Melting
Reflecting on this year’s World Water Day theme, Afobaje underscored the importance of preserving glaciers, noting their vital role in regulating the global water cycle, supporting biodiversity, and sustaining human livelihoods.
While Nigeria does not have glaciers, Afobaje warned that their rapid melting due to climate change poses global risks, including rising sea levels, coastal flooding, extreme weather events, and freshwater shortages—challenges that could directly affect Nigeria’s water security and agricultural stability.
“Glaciers are among the most visible indicators of climate change. Their melting signals alarming rises in global temperatures and poses imminent environmental threats,” he added.
According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), glaciers store nearly 70% of the world’s freshwater, and their loss jeopardizes global water security, food production, and ecological balance.
A Call for Sustainable Water Management
Afobaje reiterated the Oyo State Government’s dedication to advancing climate-resilient water infrastructure and ensuring sustainable water access for all.
World Water Day, celebrated annually on March 22, aims to raise awareness about the global water crisis and promote actions to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6—ensuring access to clean water and sanitation for everyone by 2030.
Oyo State’s commitment to improving water supply remains a priority as the government seeks to mitigate climate change impacts and foster sustainable development.
