The General Officer Commanding 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. Hassan Dada, initiated ‘Operation Safe Conduct’ in Imo on Wednesday, in anticipation of the gubernatorial election scheduled for Saturday in the state.
The ceremony took place at the 34th Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Obinze, Owerri, where Maj.-Gen. Dada highlighted the significance of the operation as a proactive measure to safeguard all stakeholders involved in the election process.
To bolster security, a show of force will be executed by officers across the three senatorial districts of the state prior to the election. The objective is to instill confidence in the electorate and ensure adequate security arrangements leading up to the polls.
Expressing gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, for support, Maj.-Gen. Dada assured officers on election duty of their overall welfare. He emphasized the importance of remaining nonpartisan and adhering to the Nigerian Army Code of Conduct for election duty while collaborating with other security agencies.
Maj.-Gen. Dada issued a stern warning against any lapses, emphasizing the protection of INEC officials and election materials without tampering with them. He underscored the consequences of neglecting duty and urged residents and politicians in Imo to refrain from causing trouble during the election, assuring preparedness to address any challenges that may arise.
