The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, addressed the concerns raised by some of his colleagues regarding the recently submitted list of commissioner-nominees by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The lawmakers expressed dissatisfaction with the exclusion of certain parts of the state from the nomination process.
During the plenary session, some legislators urged the House to reevaluate the list, while others requested that the nominees’ local government areas should be included in the list. In response to the discussions, Speaker Obasa reminded his colleagues that not all local government areas in the state can produce commissioners. He emphasized that Governor Sanwo-Olu has the prerogative to nominate individuals to work with him, while the House’s duty is to screen and confirm the nominees if they meet the required qualifications.
To address the concerns, the House established a 12-man committee chaired by the Chief Whip, Hon. Fatai Mojeed, to screen the nominees and report back to the House. The committee members include Hon. Adedamola Kasunmu, Hon. Lukmon Olumoh, Hon. Owolabi Ajani, Hon. Femi Saheed, Hon. Temitope Adewale, Hon. Nureni Akinsanya, Hon. Jubril Abdulkareem, Hon. Ladi Ajomale, Hon. Abiodun Orekoya, Hon. Ganiyu Okanlawon, and Hon. Oladele Ajayi.
During a ‘Matter of Urgent Public Importance’ session, Hon. Aro Moshood Abiodun highlighted that despite contributing to the success of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last election, Ikorodu only received one slot in the list. Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Ademola Richard Kasunmu, lamented the absence of any nominee from Ikeja. Other lawmakers from various constituencies also expressed concerns about the list’s representation and called for reconsideration to include loyal party members and technocrats from different areas of the state.
