University of Uyo to Award 174 First-Class Honours at Combined Convocation

The University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, will celebrate 174 first-class honours among its graduates during its upcoming convocation on Saturday, as announced by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nyaudo Ndaeyo. This combined event marks the 29th and 30th convocations of the university and will recognize a total of 12,450 graduates across various degree levels.

At a pre-convocation briefing, Prof. Ndaeyo provided a detailed breakdown of the graduating classes for the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 academic sessions:

  • Postgraduates: 1,167, including 303 PhDs, 608 Master’s degrees, and 246 postgraduate diplomas.
  • Undergraduates for 2020/2021: 4,823, with 56 first-class honours, 1,737 upper second-class, 2,336 lower second-class, 412 third-class, and 282 pass degrees.
  • Undergraduates for 2021/2022: 6,012, including 118 first-class honours, 2,306 upper second-class, 2,895 lower second-class, 481 third-class, and 212 pass degrees.

Diploma and certificate program graduates total 411 and 37, respectively, bringing the grand total to 12,450.

Prof. Ndaeyo also announced honorary degrees for three eminent Nigerians—Chief Effiong Afiakure, Mrs. Halima Zakaria, and Dr. Itanwan James. Additionally, Prof. Akpan Ekpo will receive an honorary Professor Emeritus degree, while honorary Distinguished Professor titles will go to Prof. Enefiok Essien, SAN, Prof. Godfrey Udoh, and Prof. Essien Urua.

The Vice-Chancellor highlighted key university achievements under his leadership, while also addressing ongoing challenges, such as inadequate funding, theft of equipment, and staffing shortages due to a federal employment embargo.
