A Russian engineer, Daniel Mukhametov, 32, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for high treason after being found guilty of sharing military information with Ukraine. The verdict, handed down by a regional court in Sverdlovsk, revealed that Mukhametov, an engineer at the Uralvagonzavod tank manufacturing plant in Nizhny Tagil, was detained in 2023 along with his wife, Viktoria, by Russia’s FSB security services.

Uralvagonzavod, one of the world’s largest tank manufacturers, is central to Russia’s defense industry. Mukhametov and Viktoria, who also worked at the plant, were accused of transferring “military and technical information” to Ukrainian special services. The court noted that Mukhametov partially admitted his guilt.

Earlier, in October, Viktoria Mukhametova was sentenced to 12.5 years on similar charges. These sentences mark the latest in a series of espionage cases initiated by Russia since its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, alongside detentions and fines for anti-war dissent within Russia.
