President Bola Tinubu reaffirmed his dedication to advancing democracy in the West African subregion after being elected as the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Tinubu’s appointment as chairman of the 15-member sub-regional body took place during the 63rd Ordinary Session held in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau.

In his address following the handover of documents from Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, the Nigerian leader expressed his commitment to ensuring sustainability throughout West Africa.

Tinubu emphasized, “We will take democracy seriously. Democracy is very tough, but it is the form of government.”

Assuming the leadership position of ECOWAS, Tinubu aims to prioritize the promotion and safeguarding of democratic principles within the subregion. With his new role, he will actively contribute to strengthening democratic institutions, fostering political stability, and promoting good governance practices among member states.

As the chairman, Tinubu’s leadership will play a pivotal role in addressing regional challenges, such as economic integration, security cooperation, and the promotion of peace and stability in West Africa.

Tinubu said: “We will take democracy seriously, Democracy is very tough but it is the form of government.”

His appointment reflects the recognition of his experience, leadership, and dedication to the ideals of democracy, which will guide his efforts to ensure the subregion’s progress and prosperity in the years to come.
