Former Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, has reiterated his respect and allegiance to Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), describing him as his leader and mentor.
During the commemoration of his 63rd birthday organized by his former appointees in Makurdi, Ortom extended apologies to the people of Benue State and Nigerians whom he might have offended during his eight-year tenure. He emphasized the importance of forgiveness and urged unity for peaceful coexistence.
Addressing his successor, Hyacinth Alia, Ortom urged him to set aside differences and collaborate with the SGF and other stakeholders to bring more development to the state.
“Benue is facing challenges and requires collective efforts. Now that campaigns and litigations are over, we should work together regardless of political differences to protect the state from herdsmen invasion,” Ortom stated.
Highlighting the significance of collaboration, Ortom emphasized the historical moment as the SGF position comes to the North Central, particularly to Benue State. He stressed the need for unity among the governor, SGF, and past and present leaders to foster development and combat incursions into the Benue valley.
In his response, Akume reflected on his journey with Ortom, praising their joint efforts in shaping lives and events over decades. Represented by Prof. John Tsua, Akume expressed his wishes for Ortom’s continued contributions to democracy and the nation’s growth.
“In the history of Benue State, I have assisted numerous individuals by the grace of God. Some experiences have been positive, while others challenging. With leaders like Ortom, who acknowledge the responsibilities of mentorship and leadership and embrace positive change, my commitment to helping and uplifting people remains unwavering,” Akume affirmed.
