The Ogun State Police Command has announced deploying 7,777 officers to ensure the security of lives and property during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, the deployment aims to address the potential rise in criminal activities typically associated with the festive season.
The State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, is leading the initiative alongside a special crack team to enhance security measures, including bolstered checkpoints and intensified patrols across the state.
Key areas such as places of worship, parks, recreation centres, government buildings, banks, and diplomatic residences will experience a heightened police presence. Officers in uniform and plainclothes will be stationed to deter crime and reassure residents of their safety.
High-risk areas like the Long Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Rounder in Abeokuta, Sapaade, and Ogunmakin will be under close surveillance, with armoured patrol units monitoring activities. Additionally, specialised units such as SWAT, Anti-Cultism, and Anti-Kidnapping teams will patrol educational institutions and other sensitive zones.
“The command is adopting a zero-tolerance policy towards criminal activities during this festive period. We strongly warn individuals with criminal intentions to desist or face the full wrath of the law,” Odutola stated.
The command has also urged drivers to practice patience at roadblocks and cooperate with security personnel, emphasizing that the measures are for the collective benefit of all.
According to the police, these operations are part of a comprehensive strategy developed in collaboration with other security agencies to ensure peace and safety during the holiday season.
“The public is encouraged to cooperate with security agents and respect the personnel on duty, who are working tirelessly to safeguard everyone,” Odutola added.
Commissioner Ogunlowo will actively oversee the operations and coordinate efforts with Area Commanders to support officers. The Operations Department has been equipped to respond swiftly and decisively to any threats, reinforcing the state’s commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment during the festivities.
