The legal team representing Nigerian social media personality and activist, VeryDarkMan, has voiced growing frustration over what they describe as “unnecessary obstacles” in efforts to secure his release on bail.
Speaking to reporters outside the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday, lead counsel Barrister Ifeanyi Okoro condemned what he called “deliberate delays and procedural bottlenecks” allegedly deployed to frustrate the bail process.
“Despite meeting all the requirements as stipulated by the court, including the conditions set for bail, our client remains in custody,” Okoro said. “This not only undermines his rights, but also raises questions about the impartiality of the process.”
VeryDarkMan, a controversial online figure known for his outspoken commentary on social issues and high-profile personalities, was arrested last week on charges that have not yet been publicly disclosed. His detention has sparked a wave of online support and debate about freedom of expression in Nigeria.
According to the defense team, court officials have repeatedly shifted timelines and introduced new documentation hurdles, which they believe are politically motivated. “We’re witnessing a disturbing trend where the law is applied selectively,” Okoro added.
Attempts to reach court officials for comment were unsuccessful as of press time. However, a source within the judiciary, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the delays stem from “security considerations and the need for thorough background checks” on the sureties provided.
Legal experts warn that the prolonged detention without formal charge or timely bail could breach constitutional protections. Civil society groups have also begun mobilizing in protest, calling for transparency and respect for due process.
As the case unfolds, all eyes remain on how the judiciary handles what has quickly become a high-profile legal and human rights matter.
