The Labour Party (LP) in Plateau State has expressed disappointment regarding the reaction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the recent judgment delivered by Justice Mohammed Tukur-led National Assembly Election Tribunal. The tribunal’s ruling resulted in the removal of four National Assembly members affiliated with the PDP in the state.

Comrade Mike Audu, the State Chairman of LP, observed that the PDP’s display of impunity and ego has inflicted a severe blow to the party. Rather than introspecting and addressing their self-imposed legal setback, the PDP chose to respond with anger, not only targeting legal experts but also showing disrespect to esteemed senior judges.

Audu remarked, “Consider their disdain and lack of respect for the tribunal, going as far as labeling His Lordship Justice Tukur as a Sharia Court judge. While they face the consequences of their actions, the Labour Party is concerned about the disgrace this incident has brought upon Plateau and its people.”

He added, “For clarity, the PDP’s troubles began as far back as 2021 when they were excluded from participating in local government elections due to non-compliance with court orders. Instead of addressing their self-inflicted wounds from 2021 to the present, the PDP continued to flout court orders.”

In a related development, a group named the “Plateau Youth Vanguard” expressed astonishment over the judgment delivered by the Justice Tukur-led National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal, which led to the dismissal of four National Assembly members.

The group, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Ambassador Duwam Bosco, and Secretary, Hon. Simon Dung Zig, rejected the judgment on the grounds that the people of Plateau State had willingly entrusted their mandates to the federal lawmakers. They asserted that these lawmakers had been overwhelmingly elected by the electorate.

The group argued that the judgment was against the interests of the people and aimed to deprive them of the mandates they had given to their representatives at the National Assembly under questionable circumstances.

Furthermore, the group claimed that the issue on which Justice Tukur based the judgment had been resolved by the PDP leadership through the reconduct of the party’s state congresses in September 2021. During this process, Chris Hassan’s Executive Committee was reelected under the supervision of INEC officials and was duly documented.

The group demanded the immediate release of copies of the tribunal’s judgment to PDP lawyers as they prepare to appeal the decision in the Court of Appeal.
