Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has affirmed the state’s intention to hold the scheduled Local Government elections on October 26, 2024, despite a Federal High Court judgment invalidating the poll due to alleged partisan bias within the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC).
Governor Yusuf made the declaration Thursday evening at the Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium, while presenting New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) flags to 44 chairmanship and 484 councilorship candidates. The governor underscored the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the state, stating, “The state will not allow anybody to destabilize the existing peace being enjoyed by the citizenry.”
He insisted that both the state government and KANSIEC had fulfilled all legal requirements necessary to conduct the election. “We have satisfied all the conditions laid down by the law and completed all necessary preparations for the conduct of the elections on Saturday. As such, the polls must take place as planned,” Yusuf added.
Despite legal challenges, the state government remains committed to holding the election, citing public support and the intention to swear in elected candidates immediately. Yusuf encouraged NNPP members to mobilize support, describing them as loyal supporters of the party and predicting success in all local government positions.
The Acting National Chairman of the NNPP, Dr. Audu Ajuji, and Kano NNPP Chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa, both expressed optimism for a peaceful and successful election, pointing to robust public support as a sign of victory for NNPP candidates across the state.
