The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a stern warning to officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) against the unlawful and prolonged detention of suspects, emphasizing strict adherence to constitutional provisions on human rights.

In a statement on Sunday, the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, conveyed the IGP’s directive, stressing that any officer found guilty of detaining suspects beyond the legally stipulated timeframe will face serious disciplinary measures.

“The Inspector-General of Police has issued a stern reminder to all members of the Nigeria Police Force regarding the importance of respecting fundamental rights in the context of pre-trial detentions,” Adejobi said.

Egbetokun highlighted that arbitrary detentions undermine public trust and confidence in the police, urging officers to carry out their duties with professionalism, integrity, and respect for human rights.

Upholding Constitutional Rights

The IGP’s warning reinforces the provisions of Sections 34 and 35 of the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantee human dignity and personal liberty. These sections specify that no individual should be deprived of their freedom without just cause or held in custody beyond lawful limits.

“Adherence to legally stipulated detention periods is not only a legal obligation but also a fundamental aspect of upholding the dignity and rights of individuals,” Egbetokun stated.

He cautioned officers against any practices that may lead to the violation of these constitutional rights, adding that a culture of accountability must be maintained across the Force.

A Commitment to Human Rights

The statement also reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to ensuring that individuals in custody are treated fairly and in accordance with the law.

“The commitment of the current police leadership to human rights reflects a broader vision of a police force that is not only effective in maintaining law and order but also dedicated to protecting the rights and dignity of all individuals,” Adejobi affirmed.

The IGP’s directive comes as part of ongoing efforts to reform the police force, improve public perception, and ensure that officers adhere to both national and international human rights standards.
