Barely a week after a tragic tanker explosion in Niger State claimed over 100 lives, another fuel tanker carrying 40,000 litres of petrol crashed and exploded along the Agaie-Lapai Road on Monday evening, January 27, 2025.

Incident Details

The tanker, en route to Kaduna from Lagos, suffered a front tyre burst and lost control, crashing into a drainage near the Kusogbogi area of Agaie. The impact led to a fire explosion that injured the driver, Shamsudeen Dayabu, and his motorboy. Both victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Eyewitness Abdul, who witnessed the crash, confirmed that the incident occurred around 6:30 p.m.

Police Confirmation

Niger State Police Command spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, verified the incident in a statement on Tuesday. He said:

“The fuel tanker with registration number DKA 03 A, driven by Shamsudeen Dayabu of Matazun LGA, Katsina State, lost control due to a tyre burst and fell into a drainage, spilling its contents. The tanker caught fire, injuring the driver and motorboy. No lives were lost, and the road was temporarily closed but has since been reopened for traffic.”

Background and Recent Tragedy

This explosion follows a devastating incident in Dikko, Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State, where a fuel tanker crash led to an explosion that killed over 100 people. That tragedy occurred as residents rushed to scoop fuel from the leaking tanker before it ignited.

In the aftermath of the Dikko explosion, Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago issued directives aimed at reducing tanker-related accidents in the state. However, the latest incident highlights the ongoing challenges of ensuring road safety and preventing tanker accidents.

Government Response

Governor Bago has expressed concern over the recurring tanker incidents and has urged relevant stakeholders, including transport operators, to ensure strict compliance with safety regulations. These measures aim to prevent further loss of lives and property in the state.

Community Awareness and Road Safety

The Niger State Police Command has reiterated the importance of public awareness about the dangers of scooping fuel during such incidents and has urged motorists to adhere to safety standards to avoid accidents.

Despite no fatalities in this latest accident, the incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety protocols and enforcement to mitigate the risks posed by fuel tankers on Nigerian roads.
