The Management of Abuja Steel Company has strongly refuted claims linking the organization to the purchase and smelting of stolen manhole covers.Abuja Steel Company’s management

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the company’s spokesperson, Chethan Kumar, described the allegations as “false and misleading,” emphasizing that Abuja Steel operates strictly on a large-scale industrial framework and does not engage in transactions with individuals or unauthorized agents.

This response comes after the Federal Capital Territory Police Command arrested 50 suspects on Monday for allegedly vandalizing and stealing public infrastructure, including streetlights and sewage manhole covers. Reports had implicated Abuja Steel as a potential buyer of the stolen items.

“Abuja Steel Company is a responsible, tax-paying organization committed to ethical and transparent business practices,” Kumar stated. “We adhere strictly to industry regulations and have no history of involvement in illegal activities.”

The company highlighted its advanced operational model, which relies on direct reduced iron-ore from its sister company, African Natural Resources and Mines Limited, rather than scrap metals. Abuja Steel also reiterated its position as Nigeria’s largest fully integrated steel producer, with operations extending to iron-ore mining in Kaduna State.

In light of the accusations, Abuja Steel confirmed it has launched a thorough investigation and pledged full cooperation with law enforcement agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible for the theft and vandalism of public infrastructure.

The statement further urged the public and customers to disregard the allegations, attributing them to attempts by vested interests to tarnish the company’s reputation.

“We stand resolutely against all forms of vandalism and theft that compromise public safety and infrastructure,” the statement concluded, reaffirming the company’s dedication to Nigeria’s economic development and maintaining public trust.
