Abuja, Nigeria – The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has explained why the Senate confirmed Dr. Bosun Tijani as Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, despite his past criticisms of Nigerian lawmakers.
Speaking at a special Iftar dinner held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja to mark President Bola Tinubu’s 73rd birthday, Akpabio disclosed that Tijani’s ministerial screening was contentious due to remarks he had made in the past, in which he allegedly referred to lawmakers as “morons.”
A Rocky Screening Process
During the screening at the Senate, a lawmaker cited an online post in which Tijani reportedly made the derogatory remark. Akpabio recalled confronting Tijani over the statement.
“I had to stop proceedings and ask Bosun, ‘Did you write this?’ And he admitted, ‘Sir, I did because that was how I felt then,’” Akpabio said.
The revelation initially sparked resistance among senators, who questioned whether someone who had publicly disrespected the legislature should be entrusted with a ministerial role.
However, Akpabio said the Senate ultimately decided to confirm Tijani out of trust in President Tinubu’s judgment regarding his appointments.
“Mr. President, we confirmed him because we knew you must have seen something special in him. You are never wrong when it comes to your judgment of people,” he stated.
Tinubu’s Defense of Tijani’s Appointment
President Tinubu also addressed the controversy surrounding Tijani’s appointment, acknowledging that many of his associates strongly opposed the decision due to the minister’s past statements on social media.
“When I picked him, it was tough. My very close confidantes, who had read his comments, came to me and said, ‘No, never.’ But I said, ‘Yes, he is talented. Because he criticizes me and the parliament does not mean he has nothing to offer,’” Tinubu said.
The President emphasized that criticism should not be a disqualifying factor in governance, noting that individuals who once expressed frustration could become some of the most committed public servants.
“Maybe his frustration at that time will drive him to contribute more to governance. And today, he is doing that, and I am very proud of him,” he added.
Tijani’s Response
Responding to the remarks, Tijani expressed surprise and gratitude for being entrusted with the role despite his past activism and criticisms.
“I was expecting a proper scolding because of my records, but the magnanimity of the President is one that I experienced for the very first time in my life,” he said.
One of the “Best-Performing Ministers”
Akpabio praised Tijani’s performance since assuming office, describing him as one of the best-performing ministers in the administration and a testament to the President’s ability to identify talent.
The confirmation of Tijani highlights President Tinubu’s approach to governance, prioritizing competence over past disagreements, and emphasizing the need for inclusivity and fresh perspectives in his administration.
