The US State Department announced visa bans on individuals who interfered with recent Nigerian elections. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that the US is committed to promoting democracy in Nigeria and around the world, and the visa restrictions are being imposed on individuals who undermined the democratic process.
Secretary of State Blinken stated that certain family members of the individuals targeted by the visa restrictions may also be subject to the measures. He emphasized that the visa restrictions are targeted at specific individuals and not directed at the Nigerian population or government. Blinken also highlighted that the decision to impose the visa restrictions is in line with the US commitment to support Nigeria in their efforts to fight corruption and enhance democratic principles and rule of law.
Recent Nigerian elections include the governorship races in Osun, Ekiti, and Anambra states, with the most recent being Ademola Adeleke as governor of Osun.
Nigeria is scheduled to hold its general elections on February 25th and March 11th to elect new leaders, including a new president and members of parliament.
