President Bola Tinubu emphasized the importance of embracing technology, innovation, and knowledge-based strategies to stimulate national growth. He made this assertion on Tuesday during the inauguration of the new Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) technology complex in Abuja.
The state-of-the-art complex features seven critical components, including a data center, command and control center, and visa approval center. The President stated that the facility was designed to foster seamless communication and collaboration among relevant agencies through an integrated and trusted information network.
Tinubu lauded the commitment and leadership behind the project, expressing optimism about its far-reaching impact on the economy and governance.
“From the beginning of our administration, we promised to deliver innovative solutions across the government, including the NIS. Today, we have achieved that and are making tremendous progress. Congratulations!” Tinubu said.
Modernizing Immigration and Travel
The President highlighted the administration’s efforts to transform immigration and air travel systems, aiming to unlock significant economic opportunities. He announced plans to achieve a 100% rollout of a new passport regime by March 2025.
“Our passport is a security document that requires careful treatment,” Tinubu noted, emphasizing the importance of modernization in improving efficiency and enhancing Nigeria’s global reputation.
Commendations for Leadership
Tinubu praised Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, for his strides in streamlining passport issuance, which has bolstered Nigeria’s international image. The President also acknowledged the efforts of Kemi Nandap, the Comptroller General of NIS, and her team for repositioning the service as a critical security agency.
“I commend you for your judicious and prosperous leadership of the service. I am excited about the integration of security across air, land, and sea,” he remarked.
Enhanced Visa Application Process
Highlighting one of the key features of the complex, the Visa Approval Centre, Tinubu underscored its potential to simplify visa applications and improve ease of travel and business interactions between Nigeria and other nations.
“With this innovation, Nigeria and other countries can travel with ease, do business with ease, and live honestly among each other,” he stated.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to leveraging technology to foster national development and strengthen security infrastructures.
