Security has been significantly heightened in Daura and surrounding areas of Katsina State as the town prepares to receive the remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday at a hospital in London at the age of 82.

The federal government has dispatched Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila to accompany the late president’s body back to Nigeria. Buhari will be buried in his hometown of Daura in line with Islamic rites.

Across Katsina State, security operatives have taken up positions at critical locations, including the Umaru Musa Yar’adua International Airport, the Daura Road Roundabout, and along the Kayauki–Daura route. Our correspondent observed at least 11 security checkpoints along the stretch between Kayauki and Daura, as preparations for the burial intensified.

In Daura itself, the late president’s residence is under tight security, with a modest gathering of mourners observed paying their respects. Armed personnel were also seen stationed within and around the palace of the Emir of Daura.

The Katsina State Government declared Monday a public holiday in honour of Buhari’s passing, though the announcement appeared to catch many residents off guard. Several students and public workers who were unaware of the directive were seen returning home after reporting to schools and offices in the morning.

The death of Buhari, a former military ruler and two-term civilian president, has plunged his hometown into mourning. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Daura residents have been grieving since news of his death broke at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Alhaji Lawal Nalado, a long-time neighbour of the late president, described him as a man of integrity who remained humble and deeply connected to his roots despite his decades in power.

“He valued time, upheld daily prayers, and maintained respectful relationships with people of all ages,” Nalado told NAN. “He was especially generous during Sallah, giving food, rams, and money to the needy.”

Another neighbour, Alhaji Hamisu Ibrahim, praised Buhari’s deep religious conviction and his advocacy for youth development.

“He often advised young people to be disciplined, stay away from drugs, and remain committed to education and honesty,” Ibrahim said.

As the community braces for Buhari’s final journey home, residents say his legacy of simplicity, fairness, and public service will not be forgotten.

Further details regarding the burial arrangements and official ceremonies are expected to be announced by government and family sources.
