Martins Otse, a controversial social media personality known as VeryDarkMan, has made headlines after revealing that the Nigerian presidency contacted him about his newly launched Non-Governmental Organization (NGO).
Otse, who is known for his outspoken social media presence, shared the news on Instagram through his handle @verydarkblackman. He said the NGO would focus on community development and improving public schools, appealing to influential figures such as music superstar Davido and Cubana Chief Priest for support, while promising transparency and accountability in managing donations.
In a follow-up post on Sunday, Otse disclosed that his NGO had received over N33 million in donations within 24 hours of its launch. He shared a screenshot showing the total contributions, expressing gratitude to donors, many of whom contributed as little as N500. He praised their willingness to support the cause despite financial hardships.
In a more surprising turn of events, Otse claimed in a Sunday evening post that the presidency had contacted him, applauding his efforts in supporting public schools. With a sarcastic undertone, the activist suggested that given his fundraising success, the government might soon approach him for financial assistance, in reference to the federal government’s recent borrowing spree.
“I just received a call from the presidency about my NGO… I imagine they’d wanna borrow money from me, since they’ve been borrowing from everywhere,” Otse quipped, while also criticizing the government for taking on loans of $6.45 billion in just 16 months under the Tinubu administration.
Otse’s announcement included plans to promote transparency within Nigerian NGOs, hinting that he would hold organizations accountable for their operations. “I go cast NGO for this country, make una dey watch,” he said, as he vowed to bring more accountability to the sector.
The rapid success of Otse’s fundraising efforts and his bold statements have sparked public interest and further cemented his reputation as an outspoken activist in Nigeria’s online space.
