In response to the alarming incidents of killings and kidnappings within the city, the Senate convened on Wednesday and issued a summons to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and the Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igwe. The decision to summon the officials followed the adoption of a motion spearheaded by Senator Ned Nwoko, who sought an investigation into the abduction and killing of Chris Agidy, an aide to Senator Nwoko representing Delta North.

The motion, endorsed by the Senate, prompted the summoning of Wike and CP Igwe to provide insights into the measures being implemented to address the growing menace of insecurity in the city. Chris Agidy, along with 19 others, fell victim to kidnapping in the Galadimawa area of Abuja in November last year.

As part of their resolutions, the lawmakers urged the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to intensify security patrols and surveillance not only in Abuja but also across the country to curb the activities of criminals.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio instructed the Senate’s Clerk, Chinedu Akubueze, to extend a letter of invitation for a closed-door meeting with the Red Chamber to Minister Wike and Commissioner Igwe. Akpabio clarified that the purpose of their anticipated appearance before the Senate is to hear the strategies and measures being implemented to combat the escalating incidents of kidnappings in the Federal Capital Territory.
