Lagos – Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announced a significant reduction in the fare for the Red Line transportation system, slashing the cost by 30%. Starting immediately, commuters will pay N1,000 instead of the previous fare of N1,500.

The fare reduction was unveiled during the inauguration of the Abule Egba Bus Terminal in Agege, a key infrastructure project aimed at enhancing public transport across Lagos State. Governor Sanwo-Olu explained that the fare reduction was part of the state government’s efforts to make the Red Line system more accessible and affordable to Lagosians.

Speaking at the event, Sanwo-Olu stated, “Today, we’ve done our numbers, we feel good and so I want to announce that today we’re reducing the fare on our Red Line immediately. We will be doing a 30% reduction to bring down the price from N1,500 to N1,000.”

He also reflected on the state’s long-term transportation plans, noting that the unveiling of the Abule Egba Bus Terminal was part of the administration’s promise made six years ago to upgrade Lagos’s public transport system with modern, sustainable infrastructure. The terminal, which will connect commuters from Agege and other parts of Lagos, marks a significant step in improving connectivity within the state.

“This infrastructure reflects our commitment to continuously enhance public transportation systems, strengthening connectivity, and improving the overall experience for commuters,” Governor Sanwo-Olu added.

The Governor also outlined future developments in Lagos’s transport network, which include the upcoming Green and Purple Rail Lines. The Green Line, a 68-kilometre project connecting Marina to the Lekki Free Zone, is set to accommodate over one million passengers daily once operational. Similarly, the Purple Line will connect the Redemption Camp in Ogun State to the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

Governor Sanwo-Olu further emphasized that new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses and electric buses would be added to the fleet by the third quarter of 2025, reducing wait times for passengers and expanding the state’s bus services.

In her address, Abimbola Akinajo, the Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), reinforced the vision of the Lagos State government for a fully integrated public transportation system that will ease commuting for residents across the state.
