Abeokuta—The retiring Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Abiodun Alamutu, has expressed his regret over the inability to apprehend the killers of Mr. Taiwo Oyekanmi, the late Finance Director attached to the Governor’s Office, who was murdered in a daylight robbery.
Oyekanmi was ambushed on November 29, 2023, while returning from a bank with a substantial cash withdrawal for the state. The assailants, reportedly five gunmen, intercepted the bullion van he was aboard as it ascended Kuto Bridge in Abeokuta. After opening fire on the vehicle and breaking its door with sledgehammers, they carted away the funds. Oyekanmi succumbed to his injuries at the State Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta.
Moved by the tragic incident, Governor Dapo Abiodun placed a N50 million bounty for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators.
Reflecting on his 35-year career as he retired on Monday, Alamutu told journalists that the unsolved murder was his only regret as Ogun State’s police commissioner.
“Despite our concerted efforts to track the culprits, the lack of actionable intelligence and information made it challenging to make a breakthrough,” Alamutu said. “We followed every lead, even extending our investigations to Ibadan, but it yielded no results.”
The retiring CP expressed confidence in his successor’s ability to continue the pursuit of justice for Oyekanmi.
“I deeply appreciate the unwavering support from my colleagues, community leaders, citizens, and the media throughout my tenure. I trust that my successor will pick up where we left off and that divine intervention will aid in bringing the culprits to justice,” Alamutu added.
Alamutu, who has been lauded for his service, urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement by providing timely information that could aid in solving crimes. The murder of Oyekanmi remains a high-priority case for the Ogun State Police Command.
