The House of Representatives has condemned the armed ambush on the convoy of Hon. Jafaru Mohammed Ali, member representing Borgu and Agwara Federal Constituency of Niger State, describing the incident as cowardly, tragic, and an assault on democracy.

The attack, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon along the Lumma–Babanna Road in Borgu Local Government Area, is believed to have been carried out by armed bandits operating along the volatile Niger–Benin Republic border corridor. The area is notorious for cross-border bandit incursions and militant activity.

According to reports, the lawmaker’s convoy came under fire between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. as it approached Babanna. Several security operatives were killed, while the lawmaker’s driver and aides sustained injuries. Multiple vehicles in the convoy were also damaged.

In a statement issued on Friday by the House Spokesman, Akin Rotimi, the Green Chamber expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and commended the bravery of the slain officers who died protecting a national legislator on duty.

“The remote distance of the area of the attack further demonstrates the extent to which Honourable Members go to ensure constituency services reach every Nigerian, no matter how far or challenging the terrain,” the statement read.

The House mourned the fallen operatives, extending condolences to their families, the affected security agencies, and the people of Niger State. It also wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Lawmakers called on security agencies to launch a thorough investigation into the incident, ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended, and take steps to prevent a recurrence.

“The House reiterates its unwavering commitment to the safety of citizens and legislators. We will continue to provide legislative support to the executive and security agencies in the fight against terrorism, banditry, and all forms of criminality threatening national stability,” the statement added.

The ambush is the latest in a series of violent attacks plaguing Niger State, particularly in border communities.

In September, gunmen on motorbikes killed 22 villagers during a baptism ceremony in the Tillaberi area, while in June, at least 17 soldiers were killed in a fierce gun battle with bandits in Bangi community, Mariga Local Government Area.

Security experts have long warned that the Lumma–Babanna axis remains one of the most dangerous routes in the region due to its porous border and increasing infiltration by armed groups.

As investigations continue, the House urged authorities to intensify patrols and intelligence operations in the area, stressing that the safety of public officials and citizens must remain a top national priority.
