Veteran Nollywood actress Toyin Adegbola, popularly known as Toyin Tomato, has advised women to remain in their marriages despite challenges, including unfaithfulness from their husbands. The actress made this statement during an Instagram live session on Monday, where she asserted that equality does not exist in marriage and urged women to avoid divorce.
Adegbola emphasized that women should not consider leaving their homes, no matter the situation with their spouses. “No matter how terrible your husband is, don’t ever think of chasing him out or leaving his house, because later, you will have to beg when your children have an important event. As the woman, you have suffered in your marriage, and if you leave, no single man will marry you. Stay in your husband’s house and beg him to protect himself,” she said.
She recounted a story of a friend who buys condoms for her husband when he visits Nigeria to protect herself against sexually transmitted diseases. “I have a friend who buys packs of condoms for her husband whenever he is visiting Nigeria. When the man arrived, he called me to let me know what my friend did. Won’t he sleep with another woman? Can a woman come to Nigeria and her husband buys her condoms? We don’t have equal rights, and I will continue to say this,” she added.
Toyin Tomato’s remarks have sparked mixed reactions online, with some supporting her views on traditional marriage roles while others criticize her stance as outdated and harmful. Despite the controversy, she maintains that women should treat their husbands as their “first child” and accept their shortcomings, stressing the importance of preserving the family unit.
