Abuja — The Nigerian Army has dismissed claims made in a viral video that soldiers stationed in Kanama, Yobe State, were being poorly fed. The Army stated that the individual featured in the video is not a military personnel.

The video, which circulated widely on social media, showed a man lamenting the small portion of semovita (semo) provided to soldiers and criticizing the quality of their meals.

In response, Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, announced that an immediate investigation was launched. He clarified that the investigation found the person in the video was a police officer assigned to the area, not a member of the 159 Battalion as initially suggested.

“The video was not made by soldiers of the 159 Battalion but was recorded by a police officer stationed with the troops in Geidam. Contrary to the video’s claims, no personnel in the area were served substandard meals,” Nwachukwu said.

The Army’s statement emphasized that the police officer’s video was created with an undisclosed ulterior motive, which the ongoing investigation aims to uncover.

Nwachukwu also underscored the Army’s commitment to the welfare of its personnel. He highlighted various initiatives, including an increase in the Ration Cash Allowance, improved medical evacuation procedures, and the settlement of overdue Group Life Insurance Scheme payments. The Army is also investing in affordable housing options, medical facilities, and accommodations for soldiers and their families.

“The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, has consistently demonstrated dedication to the well-being of troops, particularly those on the frontlines,” Nwachukwu added. “The Nigerian Army remains committed to ensuring its personnel are well-supported and adequately provided for.”
