The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, has announced that the National Assembly will conduct open debates and public hearings on President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bills to ensure Nigerians’ voices are heard.

Adaramodu, representing Ekiti South Senatorial District, addressed journalists in Ilawe Ekiti on Saturday after the Ilawe Unity Day celebration and the launch of a ₦500 million fund to support the operation of a teaching hospital annex in the community.

Responding to public criticism of the proposed tax reforms, Adaramodu questioned whether those opposing the bills had reviewed their content. He clarified that the reforms aim to eliminate double taxation, exempt low-income earners, and promote fairness.

“A tax reform bill that excludes low-income earners and prevents double taxation cannot be considered retrogressive. Nigerians should wait for the public hearing to present their views, which will guide the National Assembly’s final position,” he said.

Adaramodu also highlighted the Value Added Tax (VAT) system as a key aspect of the reform, emphasizing that regions with higher consumption would generate more revenue and benefit proportionately.

Ilawe Ekiti Celebrates Progress and Unity

The Alawe of Ilawe Ekiti, Oba Adebanji Alabi, expressed gratitude for the community’s development during the Ilawe Unity Day celebrations. Since ascending the throne, the town has achieved milestones, including the establishment of a federal college of education, a teaching hospital annex, and improved road networks.

“We are thankful for Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s commitment to making our roads motorable and supporting the state general hospital along Ilawe-Ikere Road. The ongoing projects are a testament to his vision,” the monarch said.

The event also featured the conferment of chieftaincy titles on notable individuals, including Senator Orji Kalu and Otunba Rasaq Adesanya, as well as posthumous recognition for Mrs. Josephine Olayemi.

The public hearings on the tax reform bills are expected to provide a platform for Nigerians to contribute ideas and ensure inclusive and balanced legislation.
