Ipswich, England – Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips is reportedly on the verge of joining newly promoted Ipswich Town on a season-long loan, according to multiple sources. The move is seen as a bid by Phillips to gain regular playing time after struggling to secure a consistent spot in Pep Guardiola’s starting lineup since his high-profile £45 million transfer from Leeds United two years ago.

Renowned football journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed the development on Thursday via social media platform X, stating, “Kalvin Phillips to Ipswich Town, here we go! Deal sealed between clubs as Phillips’ set for medical tests.” Romano added that the loan agreement does not include a buy option clause, indicating that Phillips is expected to return to Manchester City after the season.

The BBC also corroborated the news, reporting that Phillips is “set to join newly promoted Ipswich Town on loan for the season,” with the deal expected to be finalized by Friday morning.

A Challenging Tenure at Manchester City

Phillips’ time at Manchester City has been far from smooth. The midfielder, who was a key player at Leeds United, has found it difficult to break into Guardiola’s highly competitive squad. Despite his potential and previous success, Phillips has struggled with form and fitness, limiting his appearances on the pitch.

Last season, in an attempt to secure a spot in England’s Euro 2024 squad, Phillips joined West Ham United on loan for the second half of the season. However, injuries and inconsistent performances hampered his efforts to make an impact and impress England manager Gareth Southgate.

During Manchester City’s recent pre-season tour in the United States, Guardiola spoke positively about Phillips’ potential role in the team. However, the midfielder was notably left on the bench during City’s Community Shield victory over Manchester United, even with star midfielder Rodri absent from the squad, raising further doubts about his future at the club.

A New Opportunity at Ipswich Town

The move to Ipswich Town represents a fresh start for Phillips, offering him the chance to regain his form and confidence. Ipswich, who were recently promoted from the Championship, have reportedly beaten out competition from several clubs, including Premier League side Fulham, to secure Phillips’ services.

According to Romano, Phillips is “ready to sign later today if all goes to plan,” with medical tests scheduled to take place soon. The loan deal is expected to be officially completed by Friday morning, allowing Phillips to join Ipswich Town as they prepare for their first season back in the Premier League.

This move could be pivotal for Phillips as he seeks to revitalize his career and potentially make a late push for inclusion in England’s Euro 2024 squad.
