Legendary Folklore Musician Gentleman Mike Ejeagha Gains Renewed Recognition with Viral Song

Legendary Nigerian folklore musician Gentleman Mike Ejeagha is experiencing a resurgence in popularity with his 41-year-old song “Onye Ori Utaba.” The track, which explores the cunningness of the Tortoise and the strength of the Elephant, has gone viral thanks to comedian Brain Jotter, who featured it in a recent video.

The video has achieved significant traction, amassing 29.1 million views and over 30,000 comments on Instagram, while it has gathered 19.6 million views and more than 23,000 comments on TikTok.

Despite his enduring talent, Ejeagha, now 91, was relatively unknown to many younger listeners prior to this newfound fame. Known for his rich narratives that capture the essence of Igbo folklore and tradition, Ejeagha first gained mainstream recognition post-Civil War with his album “Omekagu,” released through Polygram Records and later Phillips Records. He is reported to have released 33 albums, featuring several classic records.
