Lagos, Nigeria – In a dramatic shootout, Lagos State Police successfully neutralized a gang of kidnappers responsible for a string of high-profile abductions targeting wealthy individuals in the city. The gang, known for demanding ransoms in excess of N1 billion (US$2.4 million), met their demise in the Ladipo area after attempting to kidnap a prominent businessman.
Reign of Terror Ends
This ruthless gang operated for over a year, striking fear into the hearts of Lagos’ affluent residents. Their reign of terror involved meticulously planned abductions, targeting victims in affluent neighborhoods like Ago Palace Way, Isolo, Okota, and Ladipo. They reportedly used specific vehicles, a black Toyota 4Runner and a blue Lexus RX350, during their operations.
Modus Operandi
The gang distinguished themselves by demanding hefty ransoms, often exceeding N1 billion, and threatening victims with violence if they contacted the police. Their escape route typically involved disappearing through the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway and relocating outside Lagos after collecting ransoms.
Police Take Down the Gang
Acting on intelligence reports, a specially trained police unit led by CSP Kehinde Oni confronted the kidnappers in Ladipo. A fierce gunfight ensued, lasting over three hours. Thankfully, only one police officer sustained injuries, while nine of the kidnappers were neutralized. Two suspects, however, managed to escape during the shootout.
Manhunt Underway
A manhunt is currently underway for the remaining gang members. Police are also investigating the hideouts of the deceased leader, who reportedly had multiple wives and owned mansions in a southeastern state.
