The Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kano State, Alhaji Ali Shettima, has paid tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing his death as a profound national loss and a blow to a generation that regarded him as a symbol of integrity and resilience.

In a heartfelt statement issued on Monday, Shettima joined millions of Nigerians and global sympathisers in mourning the late president, who passed away in London on Sunday at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness.

“President Buhari’s legacy will remain deeply etched in the annals of our nation’s history,” Shettima said. “From his early years in the military, to leading Nigeria as a military head of state, and eventually returning as a democratically elected President, he consistently demonstrated unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity, sovereignty, and anti-corruption drive.”

Despite belonging to opposing political parties, Shettima said he admired Buhari’s principled leadership and dedication to national stability. He acknowledged the late president’s contributions to public service and lauded his discipline, humility, and patriotism.

“His death is not only a loss to his family and political allies, but also to a generation of Nigerians who saw in him a symbol of integrity and resilience,” Shettima added.

On behalf of the Kano chapter of the SDP, Shettima extended condolences to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and the entire nation. He also offered prayers for the former president’s eternal rest.

“May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus,” he said.

The late President Buhari is expected to be buried in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State, where preparations are underway amid tight security and a state-declared public holiday in his honour.
