Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed deep sorrow over the military helicopter crash in Ghana that claimed the lives of two cabinet ministers and six others, describing the tragedy as a painful national loss for the West African country.

Among the victims of the crash, which has plunged Ghana into mourning, were Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, as well as several military officers and civilians.

In a condolence message posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, Jonathan extended his sympathies to Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, and the people of the country.

“I extend my deepest condolences to H.E @JDMahama, the Government and people of Ghana, and the bereaved families on the tragic incident of the military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Ghana’s Minister of Defence, Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Environment, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed and other distinguished officers and citizens,” Jonathan wrote.

The former Nigerian leader described the deceased as “committed public servants who gave their lives in service to their country.” He noted that their sudden death “leaves a painful void in the hearts of many.”

Jonathan praised their contributions to national development, peace, and security, stating: “I join you in paying tribute to their patriotism and the sacrifices they made for the peace, security, and progress of Ghana.”

He concluded with a prayer for comfort and strength for the families of the victims and the people of Ghana: “May God grant you, the affected families, and the people of Ghana the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. And may the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace.”

Tributes have continued to pour in from leaders across the region as Ghana grapples with the aftermath of the devastating air mishap in the Ashanti Region.
