Jonathan Affirms Support for Governor Diri, Citing Alignment with Popular Aspirations

In a recent statement, Former President Goodluck Jonathan has asserted that he owes no apologies for endorsing the re-election bid of Governor Douye Diri in Bayelsa State’s off-cycle governorship poll held on November 11, 2023.

Jonathan clarified that his public support for Governor Diri resonated with the majority of the state’s population, aligning with their aspirations. The former president made this statement during a visit from a high-powered delegation led by Governor Diri to his residence in Yenagoa.

Accompanied by his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan, the former president commended Governor Diri for his developmental initiatives, particularly in fostering peace and stability within the state. Emphasizing the significance of security in attracting investors, Jonathan acknowledged the governor’s role in notably reducing the activities of cult groups, especially in Yenagoa. Jonathan expressed his endorsement and urged Governor Diri to continue working diligently to meet the elevated expectations of the people, emphasizing the principle of “to whom much is given, much is expected.”

In response, Governor Diri expressed gratitude to the former president for his endorsement, highlighting its substantial impact on the success of the Peoples Democratic Party in the polls. He credited Jonathan’s support for contributing to stability within the state, creating an environment conducive to private investment. Additionally, Diri extended thanks to President Bola Tinubu for his role in ensuring a peaceful, free, and credible election in Bayelsa State.

Accompanying the governor were senators, House of Representatives members, former lawmakers, traditional rulers, political appointees, and public servants. (NAN)
