Interview with Labour Party Member-Elect Hon. Doherty Olukoya David on His Plans for Amuwo-Odofin Constituency 2
In a candid interview with Olanrewaju Adesanya, Hon. Doherty Olukoya David, the Labour Party Member-Elect for the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Amuwo-Odofin Constituency 2, shared his optimism about the positive impact of subsidy removal on Nigeria’s economy. The young and energetic businessman-turned-politician outlined his plans for his constituency, promising to address its issues and bring significant development to the area.
Who is David Olukoya Doherty?
“I am Doherty Olukoya David, representing Amuwo-Odofin constituency 2 at the Lagos State House of Assembly. I was born and raised in Kirikiri town here in Amuwo-Odofin. My father served the government meritoriously until he retired. I attended Reservation Primary School in Tolu Village, and later Ibefun Ilado Comprehensive High School.”
What was growing up like for you? Any past memories that prepared you for this role?
“Growing up, I was exposed to life on the streets, which led me to start playing street politics. My father always emphasized the importance of taking advantage of government opportunities, such as voter registration and census participation. I learned early on the significant impact government actions can have on our lives.”
How will your new position affect your personal lifestyle?
“As a legislator, it is essential to define roles clearly. People often confuse the responsibilities of a legislator with those of a local government chairman. My focus is on ensuring that the people of my constituency receive the dividends of democracy they deserve. We are committed to bringing development to Amuwo-Odofin Constituency 2.”
What prompted you to run for the Lagos State House of Assembly?
“I joined the Community Development Association (CDA) in my area about ten years ago to help drive development. Seeing the lack of progress due to ineffective representation, I decided to run for office. I want to ensure that the voices of my constituents are heard and that we bring meaningful development to our community.”
What are your main targets in the Lagos State House of Assembly?
“My primary goal is to observe and learn from experienced legislators initially. I will then work on drafting and lobbying for bills that address the needs of my constituency. My focus will be on bringing development to Amuwo-Odofin Constituency 2, including improving infrastructure, education, and healthcare.”
How do you plan to address the issues in your constituency, especially with the presence of many tank farms?
“I plan to engage with the community and hold town hall meetings to understand their concerns better. We will hold the tank farms accountable for their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) obligations, ensuring they contribute to the community’s development, including infrastructure and environmental management.”
What are your thoughts on subsidy removal and its impact on the common people?
“I support the President’s decision on subsidy removal. The subsidy system was flawed, with some individuals exploiting it for personal gain. Removing the subsidy is a step towards addressing the underlying issues in our economy. Although it might cause short-term hardship, it is a necessary measure for long-term stability.”
Can you describe the geographic spread of your constituency?
“My constituency starts from Kirikiri town and extends to Ijegun Imore. It includes seven wards: Kirikiri town (Ward D), Mazamaza, Agboju to Oluti (Ward E), Satellite (Ward F), Ijegun, CBN estate, Alakija to Abule Osun (Ward H), and Ijegun, Imore, Alowo, and Igbologun (Ward I).”
Hon. Doherty Olukoya David is committed to transforming Amuwo-Odofin Constituency 2 by addressing its challenges and bringing development to the area. His dedication to his constituents and his pragmatic approach to governance highlight his potential to make a significant impact in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
