The Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) is spearheading efforts to modernize the nation’s ports and terminals with eco-friendly technologies, signaling a bold step toward sustainable maritime operations.

At a recent event in Lagos, the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the NSC, Mr. Pius Akutah, stressed the council’s commitment to minimizing environmental impact while boosting operational efficiency. Represented by the Director of Legal Service, Bala Saleh, Akutah declared, “Modernising our ports and terminals with eco-friendly technology and infrastructure is at the core of our mission. By minimising environmental impact and enhancing operational efficiency, we support Nigeria’s long-term economic growth.”

The council is also championing research and development into alternative fuels and green shipping practices, aligning with global trends in sustainable maritime operations. Akutah emphasized the importance of capacity-building initiatives to cultivate local expertise, ensuring Nigeria’s workforce is well-equipped to lead the charge in green maritime practices.

“As the agency responsible for promoting trade facilitation and economic regulation at the ports, the NSC is fostering knowledge exchange under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), empowering Nigerian businesses to compete effectively within Africa,” Akutah said.

Highlighting the council’s collaboration with key stakeholders, such as the Nigerian Maritime Law Association, he outlined plans to align Nigeria’s legal frameworks with international standards. “This will create an enabling environment for sustainable practices and position Nigeria as a reliable partner in the global maritime industry,” he added.

The NSC is dedicated to steering Nigeria’s maritime sector towards environmental stewardship while leveraging opportunities within the AfCFTA to boost regional and global trade. “Together, we can build a maritime sector that drives Nigeria’s economic growth and strengthens our position within the global maritime community,” Akutah concluded.

This initiative is part of a larger vision to establish Nigeria as a leader in green maritime operations, fostering long-term economic growth and environmental sustainability.
