Warri, Delta State – At least five people have been confirmed dead, while 20 others remain missing following a tragic speedboat collision along the waterways in Warri South Local Government Area, Delta State.
The accident, which occurred on Monday evening, involved boats transporting passengers returning from a burial ceremony.
Eyewitnesses Blame Poor Visibility, Lack of Life Jackets
According to eyewitness accounts, poor visibility was a major factor in the crash. Many of the passengers were reportedly not wearing life jackets, which significantly increased the casualties.
“People were screaming for help. Some managed to swim to safety, but many others disappeared beneath the water,” said Emmanuel Okoro, a local resident who witnessed the incident.
Police Confirm Casualties, Rescue Operations Ongoing
The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the accident. Spokesperson SP Bright Edafe stated that six injured survivors had been rescued and were receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Warri.
“This is a tragic accident, and we are working with marine units and local divers to locate the missing passengers,” Edafe said.
Rescue Efforts Intensify
Local divers, emergency responders, and security agencies are currently conducting search and rescue operations to find the missing passengers.
Authorities have urged boat operators to ensure safety measures such as the use of life jackets and proper navigation protocols, especially during low-visibility conditions.
