EU and Germany Launch €36.33M Initiative to Boost Social Protection in Northeastern Nigeria

Borno/Adamawa, Nigeria – The European Union (EU) and the German government have unveiled a €36.33 million initiative aimed at strengthening resilience, economic stability, and social protection systems in Nigeria’s conflict-affected Borno and Adamawa States.

According to a press release from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on Thursday, the funding forms part of the Supporting Sustainable Social Protection, Participation, and Economic Resilience in Northeast Nigeria programme.

Key Objectives of the Initiative

The programme is designed to:
Enhance social protection systems to support vulnerable populations
Foster economic resilience by creating sustainable livelihoods
Promote gender equality and social inclusion

Dr. Karin Jansen, representing the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating:

“This initiative is a testament to the enduring partnership between the Government of Borno State, BMZ, and the EU, and to our shared commitment to improving the lives of the people in Northeast Nigeria with a strong focus on gender equality and social inclusion.”

High-Level Delegation Visit to Borno and Adamawa

The announcement coincided with a high-profile mission to Borno and Adamawa States, led by EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr. Gautier Mignot. The delegation included representatives from:
🔹 The EU
🔹 The German Development Agency (GIZ)
🔹 The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)

Their visit aimed to reinforce partnerships and explore sustainable development opportunities in the region.

EU’s Continued Support for Northeast Nigeria

The EU reaffirmed its long-term commitment to supporting Northeast Nigeria, stressing that the region remains a priority for EU development cooperation and humanitarian assistance.

Additionally, several new development programmes, co-funded by EU member states, are set to launch in 2025 as part of a broader effort to promote recovery and long-term stability.

Agriculture as a Path to Economic Growth

The FAO Representative in Nigeria and ECOWAS, Koffy Dominique Kouacou, highlighted the critical role of agriculture in rebuilding the region:

“The collaboration we envision is inclusive, addressing the needs of the most vulnerable populations while paving the way for long-term growth and prosperity.”

Kouacou stressed that strengthening agricultural systems would not only feed communities but also create sustainable economic opportunities.

Commitment from State Governments

During meetings with the Governors of Borno and Adamawa States, discussions focused on creating an enabling environment for these transformative initiatives.

Both governors reaffirmed their dedication to fostering peace and economic recovery, pledging to support sustainable development efforts that will uplift their communities.

This initiative marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to rebuild Northeast Nigeria, which has been severely impacted by insurgency, poverty, and displacement.
