Operatives of the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested three individuals suspected of illegal gold mining in Borno State.
The suspects—Umar Muhammad, Modu Bamai Umar, and Sani Samaila—were apprehended in Mallam Jakwa town, Hawul Local Government Area, following intelligence on their unlawful mining activities.
The EFCC stated that their operations were contributing to insecurity and environmental degradation in the region. Items recovered from the suspects included a small gold measuring machine and quantities of mined gold.
The commission said the suspects will face prosecution once investigations are completed, adding that their activities posed significant risks to both security and the environment.
