Flamengo delivered a dramatic second-half comeback to defeat Chelsea 3-1 at the Club World Cup on Friday, with veteran forward Bruno Henrique coming off the bench to inspire the Brazilian champions to victory in front of a crowd of over 54,000 at Lincoln Financial Field.

Chelsea took an early lead through Pedro Neto, who capitalised on a defensive lapse in the 13th minute to score his second goal of the tournament. The Premier League side appeared to be in control for much of the first half, but Flamengo—buoyed by their passionate supporters, who dominated the stands—refused to back down and turned the match around with a resurgent performance after the break.

The turning point came in the 56th minute when Flamengo coach Tite introduced the 34-year-old Bruno Henrique, capped twice by Brazil in his career. Within six minutes, he made his presence felt. After Flamengo had narrowly missed an equaliser moments earlier through Gerson and Gonzalo Plata, the breakthrough came in the 62nd minute. Gerson floated in a cross from the right, Plata headed it back across goal, and Bruno Henrique was on hand to finish from close range, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Brazilian faithful.

Just three minutes later, Flamengo took the lead. Once again, Henrique was at the heart of the action, heading down a corner for Danilo—formerly of Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Juventus—to convert from inside the box. The quick double stunned Chelsea and left the London club scrambling for a response.

Any hopes of a comeback were dealt a heavy blow when substitute Nicolas Jackson was shown a straight red card in the 68th minute for a reckless studs-up challenge on Flamengo left-back Ayrton Lucas. Down to ten men, Chelsea struggled to regain composure and fell further behind in the closing stages.

In the 83rd minute, Plata’s shot was deflected into the path of substitute Wallace Yan, who made no mistake with a clinical finish to put the result beyond doubt. It was a comprehensive second-half display by the Rio de Janeiro club, who now top Group D with two wins from two matches and are all but assured a place in the last 16.

The result marks another strong showing for South American clubs in the expanded Club World Cup. Just a day earlier, Botafogo shocked European champions Paris Saint-Germain, extending the unbeaten run of CONMEBOL teams in the tournament to nine games.

For Chelsea, the defeat is a setback after their opening victory against Los Angeles FC. Manager Enzo Maresca, who made four changes to the side that won in Atlanta—including a first start for new signing Liam Delap—will now turn his attention to the final group match against Tunisia’s Esperance, where a place in the knockout round will be on the line.

Despite early promise, Chelsea’s performance unravelled under pressure, with Flamengo’s tempo, experience, and support proving decisive. Bruno Henrique, in particular, reminded the football world of his quality with a match-winning cameo that turned a tight contest into a commanding win.

With Flamengo marching on and South American clubs making a statement on the global stage, the race for Club World Cup glory has taken an intriguing turn.
