Brentford Football Club have completed the signing of former Liverpool captain and England international Jordan Henderson on a two-year contract, bringing the veteran midfielder back to the Premier League.

The club confirmed the free transfer on Tuesday, following Henderson’s departure from Dutch side Ajax earlier this summer. The 34-year-old had brief stints with Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq and Ajax after leaving Liverpool in 2023.

Capped 84 times by England, Henderson adds a wealth of top-flight experience to the Bees’ squad. He spent 12 successful years at Liverpool, where he lifted multiple major honours including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, the Community Shield, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup. Henderson captained the Reds from 2015, taking over from club legend Steven Gerrard.

Brentford head coach Keith Andrews welcomed the addition, describing Henderson as a high-impact signing who will bring both leadership and quality, especially in the wake of key departures like Christian Nørgaard, Mark Flekken, and Ben Mee.

“When we became aware of Jordan’s availability, it was a pretty simple decision,” Andrews said. “We did our due diligence around his recent games to see where he is: he’s still phenomenally fit and he’s still phenomenally motivated to achieve things in the game, having already achieved a lot.”

Andrews emphasised Henderson’s character and winning mentality.

“Jordan has been one of the most influential leaders in modern Premier League years. He’s been at the forefront of driving for titles and Champions Leagues at a fantastic football club.”

Henderson began his professional career at Sunderland, making his Premier League debut at 18 and going on to register 70 top-flight appearances before his £20 million move to Liverpool in 2011. He made 492 appearances and scored 33 goals for the Merseyside giants.

His move to Brentford signals both a new chapter in his career and a major statement of intent by the West London club ahead of the 2025/26 Premier League season.
