The historic town of Oyo in Oyo State is brimming with excitement and cultural pride as Ọba Abímbọ́lá Ọ̀wọ̀adé I arrives at the venue of his much-anticipated coronation as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo.
The coronation ceremony, which is taking place today, Saturday, is being held at Oliveth Baptist High School. It is expected to draw an array of high-profile guests from across Nigeria, including the Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde, who will be leading the dignitaries.
The event marks a significant moment in the rich cultural heritage of the Oyo Kingdom, coming nearly two years after the passing of the revered former monarch, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III.
Oba Ọ̀wọ̀adé was officially presented with the staff and instrument of office by Governor Makinde on January 13, 2025, at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan, solidifying his selection and approval as the new Alaafin.
Ahead of today’s ceremony, the monarch successfully completed the traditional Oro Ipebi rites—a sacred 21-day seclusion and spiritual preparation mandatory for all Alaafin-elects—on Saturday, March 29.
Cultural enthusiasts, royal supporters, and residents have filled the streets in celebration, showcasing traditional attire, music, and dancing as they await the formal crowning of their new king.
The Alaafin’s coronation not only symbolizes continuity in one of Nigeria’s most prominent royal institutions but also ushers in a new era of leadership for the ancient Oyo Kingdom.
