Lagos, Nigeria—Residents of Ajah in Lagos State have called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to intervene in a brewing crisis over the planned imposition of a new traditional leader in their community.

The residents expressed their grievances during a peaceful protest at the Governor’s Office in Alausa on Monday morning. This marks the second protest in two weeks, following a similar demonstration at the Lagos State House of Assembly on November 28.

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Kazeem Odunlami, General Secretary of the Ajah Community, highlighted the urgency of the matter, urging the governor to prevent the imposition to maintain peace.

“We are here to let the governor know about the planned imposition of a traditional ruler in the Ajah community,” Odunlami said. “This is against our culture and tradition. Ajah has been ruled by the Baale (Olomodi) for over 300 years, and we see no reason to change this now. We appeal to the state government to save us from this imposition to avoid communal clashes.”

Concerns Over Conflict and Tradition

Odunlami emphasized that the imposition would not only violate the community’s customs but also potentially lead to unrest.

“Ajah seeks peace. Imposing an external traditional ruler goes against our history and the rule of law,” he added. “We implore the governor to act boldly and promptly to prevent an implosion within the community.”

The protesters also noted that the chieftaincy title of those attempting the imposition has no historical association with Ajah’s rulership.

Government’s Assurances

Addressing the protesters, Mr. Ayodeji Haruna, Director of the Office of Political, Legislative, and Civic Engagement, assured them that their concerns would be relayed to Governor Sanwo-Olu.

“I assure you that this issue will not be swept under the carpet,” Haruna said. “It will be resolved and attended to by the governor. Your peaceful approach to seeking intervention is commendable, and I urge you to remain calm as the government works on the matter.”

The Ajah community’s protest underscores the tension over the attempt to alter traditional governance in the area. Residents hope the state government will prioritize their plea to preserve peace and cultural heritage.
