The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, has urged the establishment of agricultural insurance and weather advisory services at the community level, aimed at bolstering climate adaptation and resilience among smallholder farmers across Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Monday by Assistant Director of Information Ezeaja Ikemefuna, the minister emphasized that this initiative will foster a more sustainable environment for agricultural investment. Kyari, represented at the event by Dr. Deola Lordbanjo, Director of the Federal Department of Agricultural Extension Services, highlighted these priorities during the Agricultural Insurance and Climate Advisory Round Table Meeting recently held in Abuja.

Kyari underscored that timely weather advisory services could mitigate climate-related impacts on the agricultural sector and significantly boost productivity. “Insurance coverage for farmers is critical, as it protects their investments, increases productivity, and enhances their livelihoods,” he said, adding that this support will help Nigeria achieve its food security goals.

The minister pointed to the escalating frequency of floods, droughts, and other climate-induced disasters, which disproportionately affect farmers by erasing years of effort and investment. “The Ministry is committed to developing a more resilient agricultural sector to meet Sustainable Development Goals, especially zero hunger, while fostering sustainable practices,” he added.

Kyari also acknowledged the role of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in strengthening social stability and promoting a market-driven agricultural economy in Nigeria. He praised USAID’s Feed the Future Programme for its ongoing support in advancing Nigeria’s agricultural capabilities.

Jean-Pierre Rousseau, Director of Winrock International, echoed Kyari’s sentiments on the potential of agricultural insurance and weather advisory services to revolutionize Nigerian agriculture. He pledged USAID’s continued support through its Feed the Future initiative.

The event brought together key stakeholders from various sectors, including the Agricultural Extension Services Sub-Sector, USAID, Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta, and the Agricultural Development Programme, reflecting a strong collaborative commitment to addressing climate challenges and bolstering Nigeria’s agricultural resilience.
