Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, will today battle the Teranga Lions of Senegal for a place in the semi-finals of the 2025 AfroBasket Championship at the Pavilhão Multiusos de Luanda in Angola.
The 2015 champions head into the last-eight fixture with a perfect record, having topped Group B with three wins from three games. Coach Mohammed Abdulrahman’s men defeated Madagascar 77-59 in their opener, humbled defending champions Tunisia 87-66, and sealed their group dominance with a thrilling 99-90 victory over Cameroon.
Speaking ahead of the clash, Abdulrahman said his side’s high-intensity, defence-first style would be key.
“Our identity is to play good defence and then run for quick and easy baskets. We may not be the biggest team, but we use our speed to our advantage by choking opponents defensively, forcing turnovers and capitalising on fast breaks,” he said.
Senegal, meanwhile, endured a mixed start to the tournament, thrashing Uganda 88-53 before losing 91-77 to Egypt. They bounced back with an 80-70 win over Mali but were forced into the playoff round, where they overcame South Sudan 78-65 to secure today’s quarter-final spot.
Both sides share a fierce rivalry, with Nigeria edging past Senegal five times in their eight previous AfroBasket meetings. D’Tigers defeated Senegal in the 2009 and 2015 semi-finals, and again in 2017, but the West African rivals last clashed at the 2023 FIBA Pre-Olympic Qualifiers in Lagos, where Senegal snatched a narrow 93-87 win.
Nigeria will look to the experience of Houston Rockets guard Josh Okogie, co-captains Ike Nwamu and Stan Okoye the only surviving member of the 2015 title-winning squad as well as Caleb Agada, who has been instrumental so far.
Senegal’s danger men include team captain Brancou Badio, who dropped 31 points against South Sudan, and Jean Jacques Boissy, while Ibrahim Faye provides additional scoring and defensive threats.
The winner of tonight’s clash will book a semi-final spot and edge closer to continental glory in Angola.
