The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Abia State branch, has suspended its planned indefinite strike after confirming the release of an abducted orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Uche Bonaventure Aguocha.
Dr Aguocha, a former chairman of the NMA in Abia State, was kidnapped on Sunday, May 26, 2026, and regained his freedom on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, after spending nine days in captivity.
The development was confirmed in a statement jointly signed by the NMA State Chairman, Dr Ezenwa Ezuruike, and Secretary, Dr Clement Ifenkoronye.
The doctors had earlier threatened to embark on an indefinite strike beginning June 2 in protest over the abduction. However, the association said the strike was suspended following the surgeon’s release.
The NMA expressed relief over his safe return and thanked security agencies and state governments for their roles in securing his freedom.
The association acknowledged the efforts of the Abia State Government led by Governor Alex Otti, the Imo State Government led by Governor Hope Uzodimma, as well as the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and other security agencies involved in the operation.
It also appreciated members of the public, the media, and healthcare workers for their support, prayers, and solidarity during the period of the abduction.
While welcoming the development, the association strongly condemned the increasing cases of kidnapping targeting medical professionals, warning that such incidents could severely undermine healthcare delivery in the country.
The NMA referenced past unresolved cases, including that of Professor Iweha, abducted in 2020, saying repeated attacks on doctors are weakening morale and threatening the stability of the health sector.
The association called on both federal and state governments to strengthen security around healthcare workers and medical facilities, and urged thorough investigations to ensure perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted.
It further assured that doctors in Abia remain committed to serving the public but insisted that urgent measures must be taken to guarantee their safety.
The association also wished Dr Aguocha a full recovery from the physical and psychological trauma suffered during his ordeal.
