The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has admitted that while the administration of President Bola Tinubu cannot resolve every challenge confronting the capital, it remains committed to implementing reforms that significantly improve residents’ quality of life.
Wike made the remarks on Monday during a media parley in Abuja, where he addressed public concerns over project visibility, commissioning practices, and the broader scope of ongoing development efforts in the FCT.
“I will not say here that every problem has been solved. All problems cannot be solved, even if this government stays for 20 years; no government can solve all problems,” Wike said. “But government is solving problems that at least will help to improve the lives of people.”
Responding to questions on why several projects are being executed without formal commissioning ceremonies, the minister explained that the administration prioritises visibility for only major capital projects, particularly those involving significant financial commitments.
“It’s not possible for us to commission every project,” he stated. “We take what we think are major, capital-intensive projects, ones where billions of naira have been spent, and showcase those. But when you’re talking about smaller projects, must we commission everything?”
Wike also urged the media to work more collaboratively with the administration by visiting project sites alongside Mandate Secretaries to verify progress being made in sectors such as education, infrastructure, and social development.
“We’re not saying we’ve done everything. But we are doing what will at least make a difference in the lives of the people, and that’s the whole point of governance,” he added.
The minister’s comments come amid continued scrutiny of the Tinubu administration’s urban renewal plans and infrastructure delivery in Nigeria’s capital city.
