The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced its intention to appeal the ruling of the Federal High Court in Lagos which on Wednesday acquitted former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, of all charges in a long-running N6.9 billion money laundering case.

Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke, who presided over the case, discharged and acquitted Fayose and his company, Spotless Investment Limited, of the 11-count charge filed against them by the anti-graft agency. The charges, filed since July 2, 2019, accused Fayose of conspiracy, money laundering, and theft involving billions of naira allegedly misappropriated during his tenure.

Reacting to the verdict, the EFCC, through a statement issued by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, said it has begun studying the judgment and is initiating the process of appeal.

“Sequel to the judgment of Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, acquitting and discharging a former Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayo Fayose from an alleged money laundering case preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Commission wishes to state that it is already studying the ruling and preparing for an appeal,” the statement read in part.

“The EFCC reaffirms its commitment to the rule of law as it briefs its counsel to appeal the judgment,” it added.

Fayose, who governed Ekiti State in two non-consecutive terms between 2003–2007 and 2014–2018, has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing since the case began. His legal team had argued throughout the trial that the prosecution failed to establish a direct link between him and the alleged financial infractions.

The EFCC’s decision to appeal the ruling sets the stage for a fresh round of legal proceedings, potentially extending a case that has drawn national attention for more than six years.
