The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos have announced their closure on Tuesday, July 15, in observance of the national public holiday declared by the Nigerian government to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The closure was confirmed in an official statement released via the U.S. Mission’s verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in observance of the public holiday declared by the Nigerian government in honor of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. All visa appointments slated for July 15, 2025, will be rescheduled,” the statement read.
The mission assured that all affected visa applicants would receive updated appointment dates in due course and that consular operations would resume after the holiday.
The Nigerian federal government had earlier declared Tuesday a work-free day in tribute to the late former president, who passed away at age 82 on Sunday, July 13, at a hospital in London following a prolonged illness.
The closure by the U.S. diplomatic offices is part of a broader national observance as Nigeria mourns the death of one of its most influential political figures, who served both as a military Head of State and as a democratically elected President.
